On the Eve of Contest - 14 Feb 2015

The timing could not have been worse. I had signed up for two races in February, to give me something to look forward to, as well as a reason to train hard during the cold winter months. Two days before the second race, with my muscles still recovering from the first, I got hit by a stomach bug. Not just any stomach bug, but a cruel, pitiless one, designed to force up not only food but vast amounts of caustic bile. "Evil" barely covers it.

So, today, the day before the race, I found myself questioning whether or not to run. Now, it's fair to say that I always feel this way before a race, but at least this time it seems to be a legitimate question. I did my best to replenish my glycogen stores and to rehydrate myself, but I'm still not feeling completely healed. At best, it feels like tomorrow will be a long run, not a race. I think I'm OK with that, though. I enjoy the camaraderie of a race, and, honestly, I've spent more time at the back of the pack than the middle of it. I had started off the first race in the middle, and ended up closer to the back. So, I might as well go and have fun. I've already paid for it.

This is, of course, assuming that my wife doesn't come down with the bug overnight...
